I would point out two things. First, if your child is going to race FIS, then you need to pay attention to the footnote at the bottom of the page. The footnote is easy to miss. Second, there is a very good chance that USSA will change the rules for GS skis for 2010-2011,
to make them the same as this year’s FIS rules. The draft rules issued in May included changes to the GS rules for this year, but those changes were taken back out before the final rule was issued in September. Thus the confusing footnote.
It is impossible to know now what the 2010-2011 rules will be, but if I were buying new GS skis for a J2 or J1, I would use the current World Cup rules (185 cm and 27m radius for men, 180cm and 23m radius for women) to make sure that I could use the skis for more than one year. The only exception would be if my child were particularly small, in which case I would pick up some used skis for this season.
